Missouri Defending State Champs

Game 1

3 September vs. Guadalupe Center at the Van Brunt Complex (6-0)

Quite an opening night as we got the opportunity to play defending Class 2 State Champs in Missouri—they had not lost a high school game in two years. And if you saw them play, you saw just how skilled they are and how well-coached they are.

But Coach Hammons is famous for saying what determines early-season games: "Deadballs and Defense." And the boys rang up five deadball goals before we actually scored from the field: two corners, one throw-in, one long set-piece, and a PK (that DJ earned us).

Those early, dead-ball goals just change the way a game looks. We scored 3 each half in a match where all the boys showed particularly well. It was, however, 1-0 with less than ten minutes left in the first half. GC had such good foot skills that if we did not defend in waves, we could not have kept them out of the net. Check out Jacob Muckerman here: Click.

But B named two Men of the Match: Senior Mitchell Farrar and sophomore Barrett Kitts. Mitchell scored twice in the match where he was just lights out defensively.

Barrett just sits in the spots, available to turn our good defense into instant offense. He just makes us go! We had the famous interview with B, but no sound. We failed Tech 101 tonight.

No STA Fans at the Match

Thank you Rags for picking up Titus to get our game out to all of our parents holed up in Lenexa Tanners. No away fans were allowed at the match.

We now will go back-to-back as we take on St. James tomorrow at home. It looked like we would not play a match, and now we will play two in two days. That's what I am talking about.

Good luck to Guadalupe Center as they defend their title. I like their chances.
