Regional Finals

Game 18: (12-3-3)
30 October at Spring Hill at 4:00 in Regional Final (1-0)

Today our 18-straight regional streak was on the line (28 overall). We met a senior-heavy (10) Spring Hill team that featured a former Sporting Junior in the middle of the field and several other very good players. And we got a sneak preview of the field where the Final 4 will take place.

Somehow we made it out of Dodge, I mean Spring Hill, with a win. Spring Hill very effectively put numbers behind the ball, and for the first half, we kept attacking down the middle—so not likely to score, and we did not.

In the second half, we did go wide a lot more, creating several very good opportunities that we failed to dummy, where we had two guys run into one another, or where we missed wide.

The goal was a thing of beauty, though. Zayveon came up from left back to drop a long diagonal to the back post for Liam Ryan’s first varsity goal. The ball had started with Liam on the left side from a pass from Welch before Liam started the ball reversal to Luke, then, Barrett to Zayveon. It was sweet. And it was much better than the bench celebration which earned us a yellow card. They could have given it to 10 different people, but Connor Murry was the lucky one.

B singled out 4 guys for his Men of the Match interview:  Liam and Z, of course, and Carter and Mitchell. The latter two had the best effect of getting other players better focused, besides playing very well themselves. But I do not know if Zayveon has had much better than today. He was brilliant. The Interview.

We did keep them off our side of the field for the most part, but they kept themselves behind the ball well enough to be in the game for the entire 80 minutes.

The real concern of the day, besides our illegal celebration, was the wet field that was causing numerous players to slip.  Our understanding is that the turf’s coconut filler does require watering. And it would appear that the field’s drainage does not allow the field to dry quickly enough. We have requested that the field not be watered again until after the finals.

But first things first.

State Quarters will be at Saint Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday at 6:00 against Mill Valley. Mill Valley gave us a very good match when we played them earlier in the year.
